Video Prototyping

Video prototyping allows designs to show the experience of using a design without actually having the design built. It becomes a great way to show new and innovative technology without the burden and overhead of building a working prototype. Video prototypes are also easy to consume and easily showcase a design to stakeholders. While it can be time consuming to make, a thoughtful designer can utilize this tool well when needed.

Overview

GroupView is a design that enables teaching and learning within groups of photographers. This prototype stemmed from design research that I conducted on photography groups at Indiana University (research overview, design document). My overall process was to more fully realize the design, ideate on how to tell the story of that design, create a storyboard, shoot the video, and then edit and upload that video.

My goal was to utilize video prototyping in order to showcase the experience of this design without actually building the design. Within the video, I created a quick clickable prototype to allow my actors (fellow students) to more easily connect with the design. The video was shot in 25 minutes, and was full edited in just 4 hours.
